    PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Jocelyn Almy-Testa Director, The Little Gallery Under The Stairs Artistic Director, Arts After Hours 25 Exchange Street Lynn, MA 01901
Arts After Hours, a collaboration of Jocelyn Almy-Testa (The Little Gallery Under the Stairs), Corey Jackson (DowntownLynn.com) and Seth Albaum (LynnHappens.com), returns to Downtown Lynn for Sights and Sounds of Cuba, Saturday, January 22, 2011 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at TLGUTS and LynnArts Inc.'s Neal Rantoul Black Box Theater, located at 25 Exchange Street in Lynn, MA.
The third Arts After Hours event will feature an exhibition of photography at TLGUTS by Gretjen Helene, live music from La Timbistica, and a presentation of Cuban dance styles from Lynn's Divinity Dance School.

Sights and Sounds Cuba marks what the group of organizers hope to be ongoing celebrations of various cultures through presentation of the arts from various locations around the world. “We will continue hosting Sights and Sounds events, and are actively looking for collaborators for future events,” says Jocelyn Almy-Testa. Potential collaborators can contact the organizers through their website, www.artsafterhours.com

Gretjen Helene, a Boston based photographer who recently traveled to Cuba, will present a series of documentary photographs in the gallery before and during the night's festivities. Helene's documentary exhibition, CUBA: In Form, explores the theme of freedom and autonomy, portrays how the restrictions in Cuba mask the people and culture, and at the same time, reveals glimpses of the human spirit that cannot be dominated.

“Gretjen Helene is the only artist I have given two solo exhibition opportunities to in the past five years. She is a consummate professional, and a very skilled, insightful photographer,” says TLGUTS director Almy-Testa.

The event also brings to Lynn the critically acclaimed music of La Timbisitica, a Boston based Latin jazz group which hails from Berklee and was awarded DownBeat's jazz group of the year in 2008. Divinity Dance Studios will also perform a brief demonstration of dance styles and will move around on the floor to help dancers move to the Cuban beats.

Admission for the event is $8 per person and includes admission to the TLGUTS exhibition. Magnolia Contreras will also present a film of her travels to Cuba during the event. At 9:00 PM, the event moves to Turbine Wine Bar at 56 Central Square for more festivities and the drawing of the 50/50 raffle prize at 9:30. Guests must be present to win.

Raffle tickets will also be sold at TLGUTS for one of Gretjen Helene's framed photographs which will be awarded at the end of the exhibition in February.

“The music remains an integral part of the Arts After Hours evening,” says Seth Albaum of LynnHappens.com. "For this event, we are proud to bring to Lynn, DownBeat Magazine's College Jazz Band of the Year in 2008, La Timbistica." “It's important to us to include a performance art piece in each event. This event includes dancers from the Divinity Dance Company, which is located in the Lydia Pinkham building here in Lynn,” says Corey Jackson. "I have no doubt that everyone will be out on that dance floor."

“A main goal of these events is to bring the community together to celebrate the common thread between all cultures - that is, we all celebrate and express ourselves through the arts,” adds Almy-Testa.

Jackson also wanted to point out how easy the collaboration was to pull the event together. “It was a very organic process,' said Jackson. “We presented the idea, and people came forward to help.”
Among those collaborators who helped bring the event together were Danielle Girard (SCI Lynn), Magnolia Contrares, Chris Barber (Subterranean), and the various business owners and artist who are participating in the event, including LynnArts Inc, who is renting the space to the group.

“The Neal Rantoul Black Box theater is a great space,” says Almy-Testa. “They've upgraded it quite a bit with professional lighting, new seating, and some other bells and whistles. It's a great space to host a community event.”

"We are also going to begin producing musicals and plays in the LynnArts Black Box Theatre. This event is a great way to get familiar with the venue," says Jackson.

Juan Gonzales, executive chef of Fernando's Restaurante, will be on hand serving up the most delicious Cuban hors d’oeuvres, Stephen Hanley of Turbine Wine Bar will offer beer and wine from their award winning wine list and the event staff will provide non-alcoholic beverages. Corey Jackson from DowntownLynn.com says, “We are encouraged by Juan and Steve's ongoing participation in Arts After Hours events. Their willingness to continually support these events says to us that we are helping commerce in the area, which is one of our goals.”

Arts After Hours is sponsored in part by The Daily Item, Ward 5 Councilor Brendan Crighton, the Economic Development Industrial Corporation of Lynn (EDIC), the Office of Economic and Community Development (OECD) and State Representative Steve Walsh.
